Liberty Gas Storage

What we offer
Access to multiple markets
via fully bidirectional interconnections with five existing interstate systems.

Ability to wheel between multiple pipeline systems on 30-inch pipeline.

Interruptible services available for seasonal or daily demands, as well as balancing, title transfer, and park and loan.

About the project

Liberty Gas Storage is converting two current underground brine caverns to natural gas storage in Louisiana's Calcasieu and Beauregard parishes. This is a region where production declines have added to tightness in supply and volatility in prices, increasing the demand for storage.

With some of the lowest fuel cost of any storage facility in the Gulf region, the 17 billion cubic feet of high-deliverability gas storage will allow Liberty Gas Storage customers to quickly inject and withdraw gas from the facility at a minimal variable cost.

Liberty Gas Storage will hold up to 17 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of working gas. The project includes 24,000 HP of compression to allow for maximum injection of 500 million cubic feet per day with maximum withdrawals of 1 Bcf per day (Bcf/d).

By way of a bidirectional 30-inch pipeline, this project will have access to more than 5 Bcf/d of interstate pipeline capacity linked to multiple markets.

Pipeline operations began in 2007. Underground natural gas storage injections are expected to begin in the summer of 2008.

The project has:

  • Two existing salt caverns with 17 Bcf working gas capacity
  • The ability to place in service quickly
  • 1.0 Bcf/d withdrawal and 500 MMcfd injection; includes dehydration, 24,000 HP of compression and an operations center
  • New wells drilled to increase injection/withdrawal
  • Secured land rights

Liberty Gas Storage connects with these interstate pipelines:

Cameron Interstate Pipeline (under construction), Transcontinental Pipeline, Texas Eastern, Tennessee Pipeline, Florida Gas Transmission and Trunkline
