Environmental considerations
Sempra Pipelines & Storage projects are designed to
meet the highest industry standards and comply with all government
regulations. These are some of the environmental considerations
specific to the Liberty Gas Storage Expansion:
- The Hackberry salt dome has been used for petroleum storage
for more than 30 years.
- The proposed compressor station and storage facilities
will be located on Liberty Gas Storage’s existing
160-acre site.
- The proposed pipelines are routed to minimize impact
on the region and environment. Liberty Gas Storage will
work with affected stakeholders to further reduce project
impact.
- Liberty Gas Storage will seek input from environmental
and local stakeholders to ensure the project is compatible
with local wildlife and recreational activities.
Wetlands
- Liberty Gas Storage has been designed to minimize wetland
impact and will comply with federal and state wetland
permit conditions.
- The natural gas pipeline has been routed across open
waters of Black Lake to minimize wetland impact. Unavoidable
wetland impact will be mitigated by working with the Coastal
Management Division of the Louisiana Department of Natural
Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Water resources
- Liberty Gas Storage plans to use groundwater to create
the new storage cavern and is working with state agencies
to ensure that potable groundwater resources will not be
adversely affected.
- The natural gas pipeline crossing of Black Lake will
be constructed to minimize environmental impact.
Biological resources
- Liberty Gas Storage is consulting with federal and state
agencies regarding threatened and endangered species in
the project area.
- Information to date indicates that no threatened or endangered
species will be adversely affected by the expansion project.
Air quality
- Compressor station air emissions will be reduced through
the use of emissions control equipment.
- The project will comply with Louisiana Department of
Environmental Quality air permit requirements.
